• Katie Ka-boom

In the early 90’s the Animaniacs cartoon series introduced a new character called Katie Ka-boom. She was a teenager who would overreact at the smallest of life’s inconveniences, get angry, become a monster and blow up. Immediately after the “boom”, she would return to her normal self as if nothing had happened all the while leaving bewilderment and destruction in her wake. In one episode, her date is supposed to pick her up at 7pm, at 7:01pm Katie loses it. As she is losing it, her family tries to calm her down but that only makes her more angry. She blows up, and then her date rings the doorbell, apologizes…

  • Reflections of 9/11, Reminders of our Hope

It was September 11, 2001. It was my sophomore year in high school and I was in Mrs. Keller’s broadcasting/journalism class. We were preparing the school’s morning news when our teacher turned on the national news. The interruption was chaotic as the newscaster said the Twin Towers in New York City had been hit by hijacked planes and our nation was under a terrorist attack. I instantly got a knot in my stomach and asked to call my mom. The first thing I said when she answered was, “He’s coming”. She knew exactly what I meant (that Jesus was coming, this was the end) and said, “I know, baby”. I…

  • Things Above

One of the ways I know the Lord is speaking to me is through the same message from various places (seven times, seven ways). Recently, it’s been a specific scripture. I’ve seen it on social media, it has shown up in devotionals I’ve read, and my Pastor has even used it as a reference in his sermon recently. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the Earth. Colossians 3:2 When a pattern like this occurs, I have to ask myself is He preparing my heart to be ready to handle something OR is He helping me recognize what I am struggling with in the present. I had…

  • A Personal Note

Can you believe it is the last day of 2021? In fact, we have mere hours left before the clock rolls us into 2022. As I reflect on 2021, it seems like yesterday that I was quarantined in my bedroom with COVID. I was diagnosed a year ago today, and spent days on end at the beginning of the year reading, writing, praying, etc. During those quiet days of solitude, I was determined to have a year that was full and productive. I planned to accomplish every goal I wrote down and I wrote some pretty aggressive goals. Those goals were not all met, in case you were wondering. A…

  • Brand Ambassador Part 4

Before you continue, if you haven’t already, go back and read Part 1, 2, 3 by clicking on each number. A Christ Follower Brand Ambassador is a person who represents and evangelizes Jesus, supports the Gospel and acts as the embodiment of Jesus’ identity through words and actions. Over the last few weeks, we’ve spent time really looking at what it looks like to represent and embody Jesus’ identity. In representing and embodying His identity you are, in some ways, doing the other tasks associated with being a brand ambassador for Jesus. Part of being a brand ambassador in business is talking about the brand through advertising. Likewise, as a…

  • Brand Ambassador Part 2

If you haven’t read through my first article titled Brand Ambassador, take a moment to go read it now before you begin this follow-up version (just click on the blue letters above). Being a Brand Ambassador for Jesus isn’t always easy. In fact, sometimes it’s REALLY hard. It requires a level of sacrifice we aren’t always willing to make. This is especially true in our western American culture. If I were to sum up our culture in one word, I believe comfortable nails it. And anything that threatens to disrupt that comfort is quickly rejected. I believe that most of the reasons we fail at being a Brand Ambassador relate…
